Dodgers 9/1/13 minor league report - Dodgers lose to Giants in Arizona League Championship

The Dodgers were shutout by the Giants 4 - 0 in the Arizona League Championship while the Quakes clinched a playoff birth

Minor League Player of the DayJacob Scavuzzo (Ogden) - 2 for 3, 1 HR, 1 2B. Not much to choose from on Sunday, and the nod goes to Scavuzzo who is putting together one heck of a season. The 19 year old leads the Pioneer League in home runs, and his .941 OPS is ranked second. Here is a recent article about him.

AAA Jonathan Sanchez was wild on Sunday but he ended up throwing 5 shutout innings in the Isotopes 5 - 1 win over the Zephyrs (Marlins). Sanchez walked 6, but only allowed 3 hits and struck out 8 to pick up his 7th victory. Chris Withrow kept his arm in shape with a shutout inning of relief, and Kelvin De La Cruz also tossed a scoreless frame. At the plate Brian Barden went 2 for 3 with a 2-run homer, while Eliezer Alfonzo's double was the Topes only other extra base hit.

AA – The Smokies (Cubs) scored a run in the top of the 9th to sneak by the Lookouts 4 to 3 on Sunday. Starter Duke von Schamann went 7 strong as he allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, then Michael Thomas got stung with his first loss of the year despite striking out 4 in two innings of work. The Chattanooga offense generated just 5 hits in this game, and Angelo Songco had the only notable performance as he went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI's. Joc Pederson went 0 for 1 and was ejected for arguing after he struck out.

LoA – With a playoff birth already clinched the Loons fell to the TinCaps (Padres) 6 to 1. Like the Lookouts the Loons managed just 5 hits, with Brandon Dixon going 2 for 4 with a double for the only offense highlight. After a couple of solid starts Zach Bird had a little bit of trouble as he allowed all 6 runs during his 5 innings of work on 7 hits and 4 walks. A trio of relievers got through the final 3 frames without giving up any more runs.

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors playoff hopes are fading fast after a 9 to 2 loss to the Rockies. Starter Victor Araujo allowed 3 first inning runs, then was on the mound to start the 6th which is when Grand Junction pushed across 5 more runs. Jackson Mateo also got hit hard as he gave up 3 runs over 2 frames. Jacob Scavuzzo had another solid game as he went 2 for 3 while crushing his league leading 13th homer of the season. Dimitri Papantonopoulos had the only other extra base as he tripled.

Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers fell to the Giants in the League Championship 4 to 0. The Giants, who had by far the best regular season record, simply shut down the Dodger bats as they collected just one extra base hit in the game on James McDonald's double. David Reid-Foley went 2 for 3 and Theo Alexander also singled, but that was it for the offense. On the mound nobody really had much success as starter Victor Arano allowed 2 runs in his 4 innings of work. Bernardo Reyes tossed the next 3 frames and gave up a run, then Lenix Osuna finished up by permitting the final run in the 8th.

DSL – Season over

Coming up – The regular season comes to an end on Monday for everyone but the Raptors, and since the Isotopes and Lookouts didn't make the post season it will be their final games. Matt Magill will throw for Albuquerque, but Chattanooga hasn't announced their starter. In fact, the only other probably pitcher listed is Gustavo Gomez for the Quakes.
