Edinson Volquez to start for Dodgers on Wednesday against Rockies

The Dodgers have decided to use their new acquisition, as Edinson Volquez will start the series finale against the Rockies on Wednesday night at Coors Field, per pick your beat reporter: Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, David Vassegh of KLAC 570, Tony Jackson, or Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

Hyun-jin Ryu was slated to start Wednesday in Denver, but with the start for Volquez and Thursday's day off, will likely start Friday's opener in Cincinnati against the Reds, on six days rest. The Reds' top three offensive players are left-handed (or three of their top four, depending on how you feel about Jay Bruce vs. the right-handed Brandon Phillips), so saving the southpaw Ryu, especially rested, makes some sense.

Capuano, who allowed one run in seven innings in a win on Saturday, will be skipped and will next start on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in Arizona, per Mark Saxon of ESPN LA. Capuano is 4-7 with a 4.50 ERA this season in 21 games, including 19 starts.

That means Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw will start the final two games over the weekend in Cincinnati, in what could potentially be a playoff preview. Kershaw will oppose Homer Bailey on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, a rematch of a September 2012 game fondly remembered by Adrian Gonzalez.

Volquez was signed on Friday by the Dodgers, less than a week after he was released by the Padres after he put up a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts with San Diego. Manager Don Mattingly said he wanted to get Volquez out on the mound first just to get his feet wet with a new organization, and did so in relief in a blowout win on Friday night.

Volquez allowed a double in his one inning of work but stranded the runner. He threw a bullpen session on Sunday, presumably in preparation of this start.

In his career Volquez is 1-4 with an 8.39 ERA in seven career starts in Denver, including allowing 21 runs on 29 hits and six walks in 12⅔ innings in three starts this season.
