Yasiel Puig returns to Dodgers lineup vs. Reds

Puig on Friday against the Reds makes his first start for the Dodgers since Monday after suffering a right knee strain against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers open their series against the Reds on Friday night and will do so with Yasiel Puig back in the lineup after not starting the last two games with a strained right knee.

Puig appeared as a pinch hitter in Wednesday's game against the Rockies, but struck out with the tying runs on base to end the eighth inning. He left Monday's game early after straining his right knee while running the bases.

Before Friday's game in Cincinnati Puig took early batting practice and ran drills in the outfield to test his knee with team trainers, per Dodger Talk co-host David Vassegh.

Left-handers a Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier are also back in the lineup, as expected. All three didn't start on Wednesday against southpaw Jorge De La Rosa for a day of rest, but all three appeared as a pinch hitter. They were a combined 0-for-3 and Ethier was the only one not to strikeout.

Brandon Phillips suffered a contusion in his left quad and left Thursday's game early, but he's back in the lineup, batting second and playing second base for the Reds.
