Dodgers face Tuesday tender deadline for arbitration-eligible players

The Dodgers were quiet over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but by Tuesday night could have a few more moves afoot, before the deadline to tender contracts for unsigned players on the 40-man roster.

Seven players are eligible for salary arbitration — closer Kenley Jansen, catchers A.J. Ellis and Drew Butera, second baseman Dee Gordon, infielders Justin Turner and Darwin Barney, and pitcher Juan Nicasio.

Tuesday night's 9 p.m. PT deadline is more of a concern for those on the roster fringes. There are no doubts that Jansen, Gordon and Turner will be tendered contracts for 2015. The other four have at least some question, and might work out a contract by Tuesday as a means to stay on the roster at least for now.

Though with no catching replacement currently lined up — or perhaps even if they do have someone in mind — Ellis probably isn't going to be non-tendered, and even though Nicasio was designated for assignment by the Rockies the Dodgers probably didn't just trade for the pitcher — on Nov. 24 — without some idea about keeping him around for 2015.

Butera and Barney, both sure reserves, are most on the bubble among the Dodgers' arbitration-eligible players, and the most likely of the seven, if any, to get non-tendered by Tuesday. But again, if the two sides can work out deal in the next 30 hours, all seven players could end up returning in 2015.

Last offseason, the Dodgers signed three of its seven arbitration-eligible players — Mike Baxter, Butera and Scott Elbert — before the tender deadline, non-tendered reliever Ronald Belisario, and worked out deals before a possible arbitration hearing for the remaining three — Clayton Kershaw, Ellis and Jansen.

After Tuesday, the next arbitration-related date to remember is January 13, the date to file for salary arbitration, and January 16, the day both players and teams officially exchange salary figures.

Here is a quick look at the seven Dodgers players eligible for salary arbitration plus estimates of their salaries in 2015.
