LOS ANGELES -- Hyun-jin Ryu looks to keep his stinginess streak alive, starting the second game of the Dodgers' series against the Phillies on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
The southpaw has pitched 14 scoreless innings over his last two starts. On the season Ryu has allowed no runs in 26 innings on the road and eight runs in two innings in his only home start. It's not as simple as putting on the road grays, as Ryu wore the home white uniform while pitching five scoreless inning on March 23 against the Diamondbacks in Sydney, technically a road game.
Ryu was 7-4 with a 2.32 in 15 home starts in 2013, with 79 strikeouts and 21 walks in 97 innings.
Part of the success for Ryu has been limiting his walks. He has eight unintentional walks in 28 innings this season, including three starts of one walk each. He ended 2013 with 11 straight starts with zero or one unintentional walk. Over his last 16 starts Ryu has 15 unintentional walks, 83 strikeouts (21.4% of his batters faced) and a 2.39 ERA.
Ryu faced the Phillies once last season, striking out six and allowing two runs in seven innings in a game the Dodgers eventually won at home on June 29.
Both runs against Ryu that game were solo home runs by Chase Utley. Ben Revere was 3-for-3 with two doubles.
Starting for the Phillies on Tuesday is A.J. Burnett, who leads the majors with 16 walks in 23 innings, and is pitching with a hernia.
Carl Crawford has hit .297/.343/.391 in his career against Burnett, and with 70 plate appearances has faced the right-hander more than all but two batters (Bobby Abreu and Vladimir Guerrero).
Hanley Ramirez is 3-for-5 with a home run and a walk against Burnett, Andre Ethier is 3-for-7 with a walk, and Juan Uribe is 2-for-14 with seven strikeouts and two walks. Matt Kemp is 0-for-5 with five strikeouts and two walks against Burnett. Adrian Gonzalez, owner of a 16-game hitting streak is 2-for-10 with a double and two walks against the right-hander.
Burnett has 34 strikeouts in 26 career innings at Dodger Stadium, but he is also 1-4 with a 4.15 ERA and 19 walks in five starts
