Minor League Player of the Day – Miguel Urena (DSL) - 6 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 4 K's, 1 walk. The 6' 8" Urena, signed as an international free agent in 2013, has really put things together in the first two starts of his 2014 season. After tossing 5 scoreless frames in his first start of the season, the 19 year old was even better on Tuesday to capture the player of the day award.
AAA – The Isotopes fell to the Express (Rangers) 7 to 5 on Tuesday despite a 13 hit attack. Clint Robinson led Albuquerque with 3 base knocks, homering and falling a triple shy of the cycle while driving in 3. Mike Baxter, Johnny Monell, and Walter Ibarra all had two hits apiece, while Joc Pederson went 1 for 4 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Topes starter Sam Demel took the loss after allowing 10 hits and 5 runs over just 3.1 frames. Steve Smith gave up the other two runs in his 3.2 frames before Jose Dominguez came in and tossed a perfect inning of relief.
AA – The Lookouts fell just short on Tuesday, falling to the Stars (Brewers) 7 to 6. Starter Nick Struck lasted just 1.2 innings and gave up runs, and while Garrett Gould also allowed 2 runs in relief, he lasted 4.1 frames. Chattanooga actually fought back and took a 1 run lead in the 7th, but Blake Smith gave up the run back, even though it was unearned, for his first blown save in AA. The offense connected on 3 solo homers in this game as Noel Cuevas, Alberto Rosario, and Casio Grider all went deep. Grider also finished the night 3 for 4 while Ryan Adams had a couple of hits.
HiA – Off day
LoA – The Loons fell to 5 games below .500 on Tuesday after a 3 - 1 loss to the Whitecaps (Tigers) in 11 innings. Scott Barlow threw well as he allowed just 1 run over 5 innings while striking out 6, but his offense couldn't help him out. Victor Araujo threw very well in relief as he tossed 2.2 hitless frames, but Mark Pope gave up 2 runs in the top of the 11th to take the loss. The offense had just 5 hits in this game, and 3 of them came from Jesmuel Valentin as he had two singles and a double. Paul Hoenecke also had a two-bagger.
DSL – The Dominican Dodgers combined for a 2-hitter on Tuesday as they shutout the Astros 3 to 0. Player of the day Miguel Urena started the game with 6 innings of 2-hit ball, with a 2nd inning triple being his only blemish. Adriel Almonte followed with a hitless 7th, then Gregor Mora picked up the 2 inning save while permitting the other hit. At the plate Daniel Padilla went 2 for 4 with a triple, and that was the only extra base hit for the Dodgers. Shakir Albert also went 2 for 4 to increase his average to .345 for the season.
Coming up – Julio Urias and the Quakes highlight Wednesday's games as everyone is back in action, with Greg Harris and the Loons kicking things off at 4:05 PST. Tyson Brummett throws for the Lookouts while Carlos Frias takes the mound for the Isotopes.
