The Dodgers picked 32 college players in the 2014 MLB Draft and only eight high school players. Here is a brief overview of the three prep players picked in the final five rounds of the draft on Saturday.
36th round - Kyler Kocher
RHP | Mountain View High School | Mesa, AZ
The 6'3, 180-pound was a pick by Dodgers scout Dustin Yount, pick No. 1089 overall.
38th round - Caleb Ferguson
LHP | West Jefferson High School | West Jefferson, OH
The 6'3, 215-pound southpaw is committed to play college ball at West Virginia. Credit his pick to Dodgers scout Marty Lamb.
39th round - Jeff Bain
RHP | San Marino High School | San Marino, CA
The 6'4, 200-pound right-hander is committed to Cal. Credit the pick to Dennis Moeller.
For what it's worth, none of these three were rated in the Baseball America pre-draft top 500 prospects, but that doesn't mean they aren't potentially valuable. The deadline for players to sign is July 18, so the Dodgers basically have about five weeks to try to convince these players they would be better off the next three years in the minor leagues than in college.
