Dodgers minor league report: Scott Elbert begins rehab, Tim Federowicz homers

USA Today Sports

With three affiliates still on an off day coming back from an All-Star Game, Wednesday was focused on Scott Elbert's rehab assignment and Tim Federowicz homering for Albuquerque.

Minor League Player of the Day

Tim Federowicz was 2-for-5 with a three-run home run as part of a five-run rally for the Isotopes. It was the second home run in three days for the Dodgers catcher, who was designated hitter for Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Triple-A Albuquerque

The Isotopes scored five runs in the ninth inning to bust open a tie game, punctuated by a three-run home run by Federowicz, to beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals) 10-5. Albuquerque also got a game-tying, two-run shot in the sixth inning by Clint Robinson and a solo shot by Alex Liddi in the ninth inning. Joc Pederson was 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly, two runs batted in and his 19th stolen base.

Rookie level Ogden

Scott Elbert got the start, his first time on a professional mound in 13 months, and was roughed up a bit. He allowed a walk, a stolen base and an infield single, then got a strikeout and a flyout before allowing a three-run home run on his 20th pitch, reaching his allotted pitch limit.

"Coming back from surgery they'll be patient with him. I think we've seen enough of these get to a certain point and go backwards," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Elbert on Wednesday. "The one thing with Scott that has been encouraging in Arizona [April 11-13] he threw a bullpen and threw really well. Ever since then, in every report there has been no negative. No setbacks like he needed an extra day, or he couldn't play catch today. He has just been moving forward steadily, which has been encouraging.

"I'm sure there are a lot of doubts, since he hasn't pitched in a while. To get out there and get competitive, then can he bounce back, there are a lot of questions that have to be answered with him coming off surgery. It's going to be a process of getting a lot of answers back."

The Raptors lost 14-3 to the Grand Junction Rockies. Justin Chigbogu did hit a two-run home run for Ogden in defeat.
