Minor League Player of the Day – Julian Leon (Ogden) - 3 for 3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 walks, 2 runs scored. Considered a sleeper prospect by many, Leon continues to live up to the hype as he is now hitting .345 for the Raptors with 5 homers and a .962 OPS. The 18 year old backstop has really come alive in the month of July as his OPS during this month is 1.111.all
AAA – The Isotopes fell to the River Cats (A's) 7 to 2 on Wednesday. Starter Drew Carpenter lasted just 4 innings and allowed 6 hits, 5 walks, and 5 runs to take the loss, while Pedro Baez gave up the other two runs in relief. Not much happened at the plate for Albuquerque as Carlos Triunfel led the way by going 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Clint Robinson doubled and drove in a run while Joc Pederson went 1 for 4 in what could be his final game with the organization.
AA – The Lookouts scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to pull out a 4 - 1 win over the Stars (Brewers). Scott Schebler and O'Koyea Dickson started the 9th with singles, then Corey Seager plated the tie-breaking run with a sacrifice fly. Oddly enough the other two runs in the inning scored via wild pitches. Dickson also had a couple of doubles earlier in the game while Daniel Mayora went 3 for 5 with a two bagger and a RBI. Starter Steve Smith threw well as he allowed just 4 hits and 1 run over 6 frames. A trio of relievers got through the final 3 innings without any issues, with Jhan Martinez picking up the win and Jarret Martin recording the save.
HiA – The Quakes washed away the Storm (Padres) in a 11 - 1 victory. Almost everyone contributed at the plate for Rancho, and Robbie Garvey led the way with his 3-run homer in the first inning. Tyler Ogle also went deep, while Erisbel Arruebarrena went 2 for 5 and drove in a couple of runs. Starter Lindsey Caughel, who was fresh off the DL, tossed 7 strong innings as he allowed just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 7. Yasmanys Fernandez and Rob Rogers shutout Lake Elsinore over the final 2 frames.
LoA – The Loons were shutout by the TinCaps (Padres) in a 4 - 0 loss on Wednesday. The offense managed just 3 hits in this one, and Jacob Scavuzzo's triple was the only one that went for extra bases. Starter Brandon Martinez fell to 1 - 7 despite a quality start as he allowed 8 hits and 3 runs over 6.1 innings. Kyle Hooper gave up the final run of the game but punched out 4 over the final 2 frames.
Rookie Ogden – The Raptors got smoked by the Owlz (Angels) 10 to 4 on Wednesday. Starter J.D. Underwood had a mediocre game as he allowed 7 hits, 3 walks, and 3 runs over 5 frames. Bernardo Reyes, however, got crushed to the tune of 6 hits and 7 runs, although the 4 errors by the Ogden defense didn't help his cause as 4 of the runs were unearned. Julian Leon led the way at the dish as he was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double, a solo homer, and 2 walks. Andrew Godbold also had 3 hits and knocked in a pair, while Devan Ahart connected on a double and a homer of his own.
Rookie Arizona – Off day
DSL – The Dominican Dodgers dominated the Royals 9 to 2 on Wednesday. Several players had big games at the plate, including Hendrik Clementina who went 3 for 4 with a couple of doubles. Daniel Padilla had 3 hits, including a triple, and drove in a pair while Cristian Santana singled twice and also knocked in two. On the mound starter Hector Rodriguez threw very well as he tossed 5 shutout innings and allowed just 2 hits. Dennis Santana hurled 2 scoreless innings of relief and lowered his ERA to 1.17 in the process.
Coming up – Five of the seven clubs playing on Thursday have announced their starters, however that is all subject to change given the pending trading deadline. The two hurlers who are mentioned the most in rumors are Zach Lee, who is throwing for the Isotopes, and Tom Windle, who takes the mound for the Quakes. Andres Santiago gets the ball for the Lookouts, Scott Barlow toes the rubber for the Loons, and Abdiel Velasquez is scheduled for the Raptors.
Minor League Transactions – AAA: Darwin Barney was optioned to Albuquerque. HiA: Lindsey Caughel was activated from the DL while Luis Chirinos was placed on the disabled list. LoA: Jonathan Martinez was traded to the Cubs. Ogden: Tyler Wampler was assigned to the Raptors from Arizona, and shortstop Cristian Gomez was assigned to AZL.
