Jesmuel Valentin goes 3 for 4 with home run and triple in Loons win

Minor League Player of the DayJesmuel Valentin (LoA) - 3 for 4, home run, triple, one RBI, two runs scored. Valentin has had a solid season for the Loons.  The 20-year old infielder has heated up in August -- Valentin is hitting .327/.377/.551 in over 50 plate appearances.

AAA – The weather turned poor and the series finale between the Isotopes and Redbirds (Cardinals) was rained out. There will be no makeup game as the two teams are not scheduled to play each other again in 2014.

AA – The Lookouts bounced back from their first loss in 12 games to take Friday night's game over the Suns (Marlins) by a 5 to 1 score.  Steve Smith had his second straight solid outing, in his 8 innings, Smith gave up  a run, five hits, a walk and struck out five.  Mike Thomas struck out two in his one inning of work.  Angel Sanchez went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.  Corey Seager and Alberto Rosario also doubled and drove a run apiece.

HiA – The Dodgers were not only team in Southern California who gave up five runs in a late inning as the Quakes took an 8 to 3 lead to the top of the 9th only to see the Storm (Padres) tie the game and then win it 10 to 8 in ten innings.  Luis Chirinos had his best 2014 outing as he pitched 7 innings and gave up three runs, six hits and struck out 10.  Craig Stem pitched a scoreless eighth inning but then Daniel Tillman and Rob Rogers could not hold on as Tilman saw four of the five batters he faced eventually score and Rogers gave up the tying home run in the ninth and the go-ahead runs in the tenth inning.  Adam Law, Brandon Dixon and Pratt Maynard each had two hits, Maynard homered and drove in three.

LoA – The Loons took their series opener against the White Caps (Tigers) 5 to 4. Brandon Martinez had an unusual pitching line, Martinez pitched four innings and gave up four runs and nine hits with no walks or strikeouts.  But it was the Loons bullpen that did the job on Friday.  Kyle Hooper had a scoreless inning, Jordan Hershiser, who got the win, went two innings and Jacob Rhame scattered four hits and struck out four in two innings to get the save.  Player of the Day, Jesmuel Valentin, had three fourths of a cycle with a home run, triple and single.  Paul Hoenecke doubled twice in his 2 for 4 night.  Josmar Cordero also hit a solo home run.

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors lost 7 to 1 to the Brewers.  Grant Holmes made his Pioneer League debut and retired the first five batters he faced, striking out three of those hitters.  But then Holmes allowed two hits to give up a run in the second.  Two runs and four hits followed in the third and finally four runs and three hits in the fourth inning finished his night.  Justin Chigbogu hit a solo home run to produce all of the scoring for the Raptor offense.

Rookie Arizona –  The Dodgers pushed over a run in the 8th and held on to a 1 to 0 win over the Angels. 2014 33rd round pick Carson Baranik got the win has he went two innings and struck out two.  2014 31st round pick Derrick Sylvester struck out three to pick up the save.  Cristian Gomez hit his first home run of the season to score the winning run.   Alex Verdugo went 2 for 4 has he chases the batting title, his .338 average ranks him third in the league.

DSL – The Dodgers defeated the Athletics 5 to 1 as they try to stay in their playoff chase.  Miguel Urena, whose 6 foot, 8 inch frame must make him among the tallest players in the Dodger system, went five innings and gave up three hits and struck out four.  Edward Perez struck out three in his two innings and got the save.  Shakir Albert tripled and scored two runs,  Luis Paz hit his first home run of the season.  Carlos Aquino went 3 for 3.  The win kept the Dodgers within 2.5 games with seven games to go in their regular season.

Minor League Transactions – AAA: Justin Germano was assigned to the Isotopes; Pedro Baez was recalled by the Dodgers.  AA: Jarret Martin was placed on the DL, Anthony Siama was assigned to the Lookouts.  HiA:  Brandon Dixon was activated from the DL.  LoA: Devon Ahart was assigned to the Loons roster, Jacob Scavuzzo was sent to Ogden.
