Minor League Player of the Day – Justin Chigbogu (Ogden Raptors - Pioneer Rookie) - 2 for 4, double and home run, walk, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Chigbogu 13 home runs leads the league and Chigbogu's 39 RBI is good for a tie for second in the league.
AAA – The Isotopes came home to play the Rainers (Mariners) and lost the first game of the series 5 to 2. Barry Enright gave up three runs in the top of the first and the Rainers never looked back. Enright gave up all five runs (four earned), eight hits, walked one and had only one strikeout in 6.1 innings. Pedro Baez pitched a scoreless inning. As for the Isotope offense, it had not arrived back from California. Joc Pederson was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Carlos Triunfel (he had two hits) and Darwin Barney drove in one run apiece.
AA – The Lookouts doubled up on the Barons (White Sox) by winning 6 to 3. Matt Shelton pitched 5 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), five hits, one walk and Shelton struck out four. The Lookout bullpen finished up, Jarrett Martin allowed the only run as he struck out the side in the 9th inning. Darnell Sweeney got on base three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks. Also, Sweeney scored two runs. Bobby Coyle, Corey Seager and Walter Ibarra were each 2 for 4. Corey Seager has gotten out to faster start in AA than he did last year when he went to the California League. If there is any concern it could be that Seager has struck out 15 times in 43 at bats and only walked once.
HiA – The Quakes and the Blaze (Reds) were scoreless while Julio Urias pitched four shutout innings but after Urias left, the Blaze cruised to a 6 to 1 win. If you combined Urias's last two starts, Urias has pitched eight innings, given up an unearned run, four hits, three walks and struck out 12. But Urias only went four innings on Saturday night and then the ball was handed to starter turned reliever Fabio Martinez. Martinez had about a bad a game as you can have when you pitch just one inning plus. Martinez gave up five runs, three hits and two walks. Despite putting up nine hits, the Quakes only scored one run as the Blaze pitchers struck out 13.
LoA – The Loons could not do much against the Lugnuts (Blue Jays) as the Loons lost 5 to 1. Victor Arano has had a solid first full season, he has struck out 73 and walked 19 in 77.2 innings. He has given up 81 hits and while his ERA is a little over four runs, he certainly looks like someone to watch. On Saturday, Arano pitched five innings, allowed two runs (one earned), four hits and three strikeouts. Brandon Trinkwon led the Loons with three hits.
Rookie Ogden – The Raptors put six runs on the scoreboard in the top of 7th which led them over the Owlz (Angels) 9 to 4. John Ritchey and Trevor Oaks each pitched three innings, Ritchey gave up two runs (one earned) and Oaks gave up one run. Oaks was the beneficiary of the six run inning and thus got the win. Cody Bellinger had three hits. Justin Chigbogu led the team with his 4 RBI.
Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers won 4 to 1 over the White Sox. One of my favorite names from last year's Dominican Summer League team was Jairo Pacheco, a left-handed pitcher from Venezuela. Pacheco had a poor outing on July 1st and then didn't pitch in a game until July 13th. Including the game on the 13th, Pacheco has pitched in four games for a total of 14 innings. In those outings, Pacheco has given up one run, six hits, seven walks and 18 strikeouts. Pacheco was the winner on Saturday night. Alex Verdugo was 1 for 4 with a double. Michael Medina had a solid July as he posted .290/.421/.629 with five home runs in 75 plate appearances. On Saturday, Medina was 2 for 4 with a double.
DSL – The Dominican Dodgers won 7 to 3 over the Rays. Osiris Ramirez and Dennys Chica combined to hold down the Rays. Chica had a four inning save, allowing one run, five hits and struck out five.
Coming up – Red Patterson is scheduled for the Isotopes; Chris Reed goes to the mound for the Lookouts; Jharel Cotton pitches for the Quakes; Greg Harris toes the rubber for the Loons. Arizona also plays on Sunday.
Minor League Transactions – AAA - LHP Paco Rodriguez was recalled by the Dodgers; LHP Scott Elbert was activated.
