SAN DIEGO -- Dodgers minor league prospect Jose De Leon was named the Logan Hurlbert Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year on Saturday, for his work this season on the mound with the rookie league Ogden Raptors.
The 22-year-old right-hander, picked in the 30th round of the 2013 draft out of Southern University, was 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA in 10 games, including eight starts with the Raptors, with 77 strikeouts against 19 walks in 54... innings.
De Leon was promoted to Class-A Great Lakes on Aug. 12, and has picked up right where he left off. In four starts with the Loons, De Leon is 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA, with a whopping 42 strikeouts and only two walks in 22... innings.
De Leon won pitcher of the week honors twice with the Raptors this season.
The pitcher of the year award is named after Hurlbert, a longtime baseball executive from Great Falls, Montana, who among other things was general manager of the Great Falls Dodgers in the Pioneer League for 19 seasons, through 1987. Hurlbert passed away in 2004.
As pitcher of the year, De Leon also made the 2014 Pioneer League All-Star team. He was one of two Raptors on the team, along with catcher Julian Leon.
