Dodgers 8/5/14 minor league report - Loons win third straight 1-run game

Starter Scott Barlow was solid for the Loons on Tuesday while closer Jacob Rhame extended his scoreless streak to 22.1 innings

The Loons won their 3rd straight 1-run game on Tuesday
The Loons won their 3rd straight 1-run game on Tuesday

Minor League Player of the DayScott Barlow (LoA) - 6 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 7 K's.  I could have went several different directions with this award, but I'm giving it to Barlow as he only allowed 3 hits in 6 innings and struck out 7.  While the 21 year old hasn't been overly impressive this season in terms of ERA, Barlow does have almost a strikeout per inning which could bode well for his future.

AAA Jamie Romak smacked a pair of homers on Tuesday but it wasn't enough as the Isotopes fell to the Rainiers (Mariners) 7 to 5.  After going 3 for 4 with a double and a homer on Monday, Romak continued his recent hot streak with 2 more long balls.  Mike Baxter doubled to give him four two-baggers over the last two days, but that was it for the offensive highlights as Joc Pederson was again held hitless.  On the mound Zach Lee had another rough game as he allowed 6 hits and 4 runs over 6 innings and failed to strike out a single batter.  Scott Elbert gave up an unearned run in relief then Robert Carson permitted two more unearned runs, all courtesy of a couple of rare Darwin Barney errors.

AA – Off day

HiA – The Quakes led for the most of their game on Tuesday, but allowed 4 late runs and eventually fell to the Mavericks (Mariners) 5 - 4 on a walk-off single.  Starter Tom Windle threw well in this game as he allowed just 3 hits over 5 shutout innings, but then the bullpen ran into tough times.  Gustavo Gomez was changed with 3 runs (2 earned) even though he did not give up a hit because he walked 3, then Rob Rogers was charged with the blown save and the loss.  At the dish Aaron Miller hit his 11th homer of the season and Robbie Garvey went 2 for 3 with a double and a couple of RBI's.

LoA – The Loons pulled out another one-run win, this time defeating the Dragons (Reds) 2 to 1.  Great Lakes scored both of their runs in the 3rd inning, the first one coming on an error and the second coming on a Josmar Cordero RBI single.  Jacob Scavuzzo had the only extra base hit for the Loons as he tripled.  Starter Scott Barlow picked up the win after allowing just 3 hits and 1 run over 6 frames.  He struck out 7 and walked a pair.  Ralston Cash was perfect in 2 innings of relief and he also punched out 4, then Jacob Rhame picked up his 5th save of the year while extending his scoreless streak to 22.1 frames.

Rookie Ogden – A couple of long balls from 3rd baseman Yensys Capellan didn't quite get the job done as the Raptors fell to the Osprey (Dbacks) 8 to 3.  For Yensys it was his 2nd and 3rd homers of the season, and he drove in all 3 runs.  Cody Bellinger's double was the club's only other extra base hit.  On the mound starter J.D. Underwood gave up 2 first inning homers and that was it for him as he recorded just 3 outs.  Vaugh Hayward tossed 3 innings of scoreless relief, but then Karch Kowalcyk permitted a couple of more jacks during his 2.2 frames to put the game out of reach for good.

Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers fell to the Giants 7 to 1 on Tuesday.  Despite the quiet offensive day two of the better prospects on the team hit well as Alex Verdugo managed to go 3 for 5 and Michael Medina was 2 for 4.  Starter Kevin Guzman ran into early trouble as he gave up 4 hits and 3 runs despite recording just 3 outs, however his bullpen was solid until the 7th inning when Oscar Cruz allowed 3 more runs.

DSL – The Dominican Dodgers took advantage of 5 errors by the opposition to defeat the Athletics 5 to 2.  Thanks to the miscues the offense didn't even need an extra base hit in this game as the Dodgers collected 8 singles in the victory.  Gersel Pitre went 2 for 4 and drove in a run while Samuel Ortiz had the only other RBI for the Dodgers.  Starter Gregor Mora lasted 6 innings and allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits to record the win.  Edward Perez picked up his 3rd save with a perfect 9th.

Coming up – The Isotopes have Wednesday off, but everyone else plays including Chris Anderson and the Quakes.  Andres Santiago takes the mound for the Lookouts, Zachary Bird gets the call for the Loons, and Victor Gonzalez throws for the Raptors.

Minor League Transactions – AAA: Pedro Baez was recalled by the Dodgers.  LoA: Luis De Paula was sent to Arizona on a rehab assignment
