Dodgers minor league report August 8: Jose De Leon strikes out 11 in Raptors win

The 22-year-old right-hander was promoted on Saturday was promoted to Class-A Great Lakes.

Minor League Player of the DayJose De Leon (Rookie-Pioneer) - the just-turned 22 year old is making his second trip around the Pioneer League after being drafted by the Dodgers in 2013.  On Friday, De Leon matched his season high seven innings pitched in which he allowed no runs, 3 hits, no walks and struck out 11.  For the season, De Leon is averaging over 12 strikeouts per nine innings and has a four to one strikeout to walk ratio.

UPDATE: De Leon was promoted on Saturday to Class-A Great Lakes.

AAA – The Isotopes took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth but then the 51's (Mets) drew a 5 and defeated the Isotopes 9-6 on Friday night in Las Vegas.  Darwin Barney doubled to lead off the game and then back to back home runs by Joc Pederson and TIm Federowicz gave the Isotopes a three run lead.  Both starting pitchers did not make it past the fifth, Barry Enright started for the Isotopes and he gave up four runs, six hits, two walks and also struck out four in 4.2 innings.  Yimi Garcia was the most effective pitcher for the Isotopes, Garcia pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings and struck out four.  Scott Elbert entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and was not effective, he faced six batters, five of them got hits in his 1/3 inning and each of those hitters scored.  Joc Pederson and Tim Federowicz each had three hits, Darwin Barney scored three runs and went 2 for 4.

AA – The Lookouts shutout the Biscuits (Rays) 3-0 on Friday.  Matt Shelton started and pitched a solid 6 innings, giving up four hits, one walk and struck out five.  Freddie Cabrera, Daniel Coulombe and Jarret Martin also put up zeros to close out the game.  Daniel Mayora went 3 for 4 and scored a run, Corey Seager had a 2 for 4 night with a double and an RBI.  Scott Schebler was 1 for 4 with a run scored.

HiA Three late runs pushed the 66ers (Angels) over the Quakes 5-1.  Jharel Cotton pitched at least seven innings for the fourth straight game.  On Friday, Cotton pitched 7 innings, allowing two runs, six hits, two walks and struck out four.  Yasmanys Fernandez came in the bottom of the eighth and gave up three runs.  Aaron Miller doubled and scored the only run for the Quakes.  Robbie Garvey and Kyle Farmer each had two hits.

LoA – The Loons trailed by two but then they tied it in the eighth and scored three more runs in the ninth to defeat South Bend (Dbacks) 5 to 2 Greg Harris started and went 5 innings, two runs (one earned), four hits, one walk and struck out three.  Matt Campbell pitched the next two innings and struck out three.  Victor Araujo, who go the win, pitched two innings and also struck out three.  Malcolm Holland went 4-5 and stole his 40th base of the season.  Holland drove in the go-ahead run and then rode home on a Jesmuel Valentin home run that provided the final runs of the night.

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors shutout the Brewers 8-0 as Jose De Leon strikes out 11 in the victory. De Leon has made his second trip around the Pioneer League a fine one as he lowered his ERA to 2.65 in his seven innings of shutout ball.  Four Raptors had two hits apiece, Michael Ahmed, Cody Bellinger, Jimmy Allen and my favorite name of the night, Tyler WamplerJulian Leon returned from his suspension and went 1 for 3 with two walks.

Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers were shutout by the Mariners 2-0 on Friday.   Grant Holmes recorded his second loss of the season, Holmes pitched 5 innings, allowed two runs, two hits two walks and struck out three.  The Dodgers only had three hits, Alex Verdugo was 1 for 4.

DSL – The Dominican Dodgers shutout the Astros Blue (Astros) 2-0.  Osiris Ramirez, Angel Bautista, and Edward Perez collectively scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out eight.

Coming up – Everyone but Arizona plays on Saturday starting with Brandon Martinez and the Loons at 4:05 PT. Steve Smith and the Lookouts take the field at 4:35, John Richy and the Raptors play at 6:00, and the Quakes and Isotopes both play at 7:05 and will send Luis Chirinos and making his AAA debut, Chris Reed to the mound, respectively.
