2014 MLB standings: Pirates clinch postseason spot, Dodgers clinch tie for NL West

Kevin C. Cox

The Dodgers got closer to both the National League West crown and the NL No. 2 seed in the playoffs, and the Pirates officially joined the October party.

Tuesday results

Dodgers 4, Giants 2: The six-month fun ride that is Justin Turner reached what seemed to be his signature performance, with a pair of home runs against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. On his 30th birthday, Matt Kemp went deep as well, supporting Zack Greinke and his eight innings of work, giving the Dodgers a magic number of just one to clinch the division.

Pirates 3, Braves 2: Atlanta took an early 2-0 lead, but the Pirates scored a run in three straight middle innings, taking the lead in the sixth when Starling Marte doubled home Andrew McCutchen. With the win and Milwaukee's loss, Pittsburgh clinched a playoff spot for a second straight season.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 3: Welington Castillo singled to center field to score Anthony Rizzo in the 10th inning, giving Chicago a walk-off win over the rival Cardinals. The Dodgers' magic number to clinch the No. 2 seed over St. Louis is two.

Nationals 4, Mets 2: The red-hot Adam LaRoche hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, giving Washington a lead it would never relinquish. The Nationals moved ever closer to the No. 1 seed in the NL.

Reds 3, Brewers 1: Milwaukee has an elimination number of just one after falling in Cincinnati. Johnny Cueto pitched eight innings for his 19th win, and struck out seven.

Cueto and Stephen Strasburg have 235 strikeouts to lead the National League, each with one scheduled start remaining. Clayton Kershaw has 228 strikeouts and with eight or more strikeouts on Wednesday would lead the National League - however fleeting - for the first time since Opening Day.
