The right-handed Smith was 2-7 with a 3.82 ERA in 48 relief appearances between Class-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga, with 61 strikeouts and 29 walks 61⅓ innings, including striking out a batter per inning at each level.
At 26 Smith was a bit old for his minor league levels but for good reason. This year was just his second campaign on the mound and his first full season, having converted from the outfield. The second-round pick in 2009 out of Cal was an outfielder for four years before converting to the mound in July 2013.
Smith will join four Lookouts teammates on the Glendale roster: shortstop Corey Seager, outfielder Scott Schebler, utility man Darnell Sweeney and left-handed pitcher Michael Thomas.
The Desert Dogs, who play their home games at the Dodgers facility at Camelback Ranch, begin play on Oct. 7 with a home game against Mesa.
