The Dodgers had a reasonable chance this offseason to bring Zack Greinke back on a long-term contract. That is, until the Diamondbacks came out of nowhere on Friday night to give the right-hander an offer that had an extra year and over $50 million more than the Dodgers were willing to spend.
It started with this...
Sources: #DBacks pursuing Greinke.

Less than 2 hours later the bombshell was dropped...
Sources: Greinke in agreement with #DBacks, pending physical.

Poor Larry King had been screaming for the Dodgers to re-sign Greinke...
Crying in my iced coffee right now. Looks like the #Dodgers lost #Greinke. Sad, sad, sad...

Justin Turner discussed the possibility of changing Greinke's mind...
.@clintcarlton something tells me the @deandrejordan6 approach won't work on Zack ✈️ #LA @Dodgers

The Dodgers should take the $206.5M they didn't spend on Zack Greinke and spend it all on middle relievers age 35 and over.
— Ned2point0 (@Ned2point0) December 5, 2015
They will add another if/when Howie Kendrick signs elsewhere...
#Dodgers now have three picks in the top 50, and will keep at least two. Greinke comp pick + comp pick for not signing Kyle Funkhouser.

So basically all the "insiders" who've been hammering home "Giants or Dodgers" all week had no clue what was actually happening. Solid.

What the Dodgers were willing to offer...
so LA offer was about 31M per year for 5 yrs. never felt comfortable going 6 for 32-yr-old pitcher.

Final damage of the contract...
I'm told Greinke's deal is for six years and $206.5M.
