Zack Greinke amassing a quantity of quality starts

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers look for their second home sweep of the Braves in two years, and send Zack Greinke to the mound in the homestand finale on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke has gotten fantastic results so far this season, going 5-1 with a 1.48 ERA, with 49 strikeouts and 12 walks in 61 innings. He has pitched a quality start in each of his nine starts. Since 1914, only three Dodgers have had longer quality start streaks to open a season — Claude Osteen (12 in 1971), Orel Hershiser (10 in 1994) and Ismael Valdes (10 in 1996).

In May Greinke has averaged over seven innings per start, has 22 strikeouts against only five walks, and has allowed four runs in four starts.

Greinke has allowed exactly one run in each of those four starts. The only longer Dodgers streaks of starts with exactly one run allowed since 1914 were by Kevin Brown (six in 2003), Don Sutton (five in 1980) and Brad Penny (five in 2007).

Alex Wood starts for the Braves on Wednesday, just the seventh time in 46 games the Dodgers will have faced a left-handed starting pitcher.

Wednesday also happens to be Dodgers coaster giveaway night at Dodger Stadium, with an unintentionally opponent-friendly slogan (h/t Sarah Wexler):

When told on Tuesday that his advertising slogan matched Wednesday's starting pitcher, Scott Van Slyke just laughed.

"That's quite a coincidence," he said.
