LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers on Tuesday selected right-handed pitcher Kevin Brown out of Cal State Dominguez Hills with their ninth-round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, pick No. 282 overall.
Not a bad birthday present for the redshirt senior, who turned 23 on Tuesday.
Brown was 7-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 17 games for Dominguez Hills in 2015, including 11 starts, with 67 strikeouts and 32 walks in 73⅔ innings and earned second-team All-CCAA honors. He hails from Newbury Park High School in Thousand Oaks.
The right-hander made three starts in 2013 and missed all of 2014 after shoulder surgery. Rhiannon Potkey of the Ventura County Daily Star has more:
Brown missed last season after having surgery to repair a bursa sac injury in his shoulder, and was determined to come back even stronger.
"Nothing really held me back this year," Brown said. "I knew it was my last year playing college ball, and in the back of my mind I knew it could have been the last year ever playing baseball. I really just let it all go this year."
"Kevin was an integral part of our success this past year and is a great teammate, and hard worker and has a big arm," Dominguez Hills coach Tyler Wright said in a statement.
Brown's Dominguez Hills bio says the right-hander "would most like to meet Zach Galifianakis."
The slot bonus value for this pick is $155,900.
This is the second straight year the Dodgers have drafted someone out of Cal State Dominguez Hills, with pitcher Bubby Rossman taken in the 22nd round in 2014.
