RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- The Quakes took an early lead but the Ports (Athletics) knocked out Zack Bird in the fourth inning to defeat the Quakes 14-2 at LoanMart Field at Rancho Cuncamonga. Zack Bird pitched 3⅔ innings and gave up six runs (five earned), four hits, four walks and struck out four.
Joel Peralta made his second rehab appearance and he was greeted with a double. A pop fly single put runners on the corners. There were two fly ball outs after that, the first drove in a run. Peralta made 25 pitches and was unable to put any batter away after getting two strikes.
Scott Van Slyke started at designated hitter as he played in his first rehab game. In his first plate appearance, Van Slyke hit a double down the right field line. Cody Bellinger drove in Van Slyke on his double to center. Tyler Ogle hit a ball to wall that the right fielder could not hold onto. That put runners on second and third. The Quakes scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by Paul Hoenecke. Van Slyke would finish 1-for-4 with his double and one strikeout.
Seven pitchers threw for the Quakes. Besides Bird and Peralta, Victor Araujo, Luis De Paula, Joe Broussard, Rob Rogers and Dan Tillman.
The Quakes loss combined with the JetHawks win cut the Quakes division lead to two games with eight games to play in the first half of their season.
