Zack Greinke, Madison Bumgarner face off on mound and at the plate

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

LOS ANGELES -- Tuesday night features a series of irresistible forces and immovable objects in constant battle, with dual threat aces Zack Greinke and Madison Bumgarner on the mound in the second game of a three-game seriee at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke won the Silver Slugger award as the top hitting pitcher in the National League in 2013, his first season as a Dodger. He hit .328/.409/.379 that season with three doubles and seven walks.

Bumgarner won the Silver Slugger in 2014, hitting .258/.286/.470 with four home runs and 15 RBI. This year he has been even better, hitting .262/.286/.525 with five home runs.

Bumgarner's .804 OPS as a pitcher is by far tops in the majors this season, among pitchers with at least 30 plate appearances, and Greinke is seventh at .574, with two home runs of his own, both hit in August.

The two get to face each other at night, trying to snap a string of a different sort. Pitchers are 0-for-43 against Bumgarner this season, with one walk and 21 strikeouts. Against Greinke, pitchers are 0-for-42 with one walk and 21 strikeouts.

The Giants this season have won all three of Bumgarner's starts against the Dodgers, all three against Clayton Kershaw. Bumgarner in those three games has a 1.31 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 20⅔ innings..

Greinke has only started once against the Giants this year, a win on April 29 in Los Angeles. Since joining the Dodgers, he is 6-0 with a 1.96 ERA in seven starts against the Giants, with 47 strikeouts and eight walks in 46 innings. The Dodgers have won all seven games.

Something has to give on Tuesday night. Or are we headed for another 14-inning thriller?
