RANCHO CUCAMONGA --- A 2-2 tie turned into a blowout as the Quakes sent up 13 batters in the sixth inning with seven of them scoring. The Quakes would go on to beat the Giants 12-3 and take Game 1 of the California League Championship Series.
Chase De Jong was the winning pitcher while Martin Agosta took the loss though he only allowed the first four Quake's runs to score.
The sixth-inning outburst started after one out. Alex Verdugo got aboard on an error by shortstop Christian Arroyo. Tyler Ogle followed with a moon shot to left field to give the Quakes a 4-2 lead.
The Giants brought in Jose Reyes for Agosta and Hoenecke greeted him walk. Joey Curletta then drilled a ball to the wall in right center that scored Hoenecke with Curletta taking third.
With two out, Locastro walked and Calhoun singled in Curletta. Jacob Scavuzzo followed with a three-run home to make it a seven run inning. The Quakes would then load the bases before Hoenecke grounded into a force play.
Chase De Jong started and pitched a strong six innings. De Jong gave up two runs, three hits, two walks and struck out six. Joe Broussard got the save as he pitched the final three innings for the Quakes.
The Giants had jumped out in front in the third inning. With one out, Seth Harrison singled and Chuckie Jones hit a two-run home run.
The Quakes tied it in the fifth inning, Paul Hoenecke, who had hit 10 total home runs in stints at Tulsa and Rancho Cucamonga, led off with a solo shot, his second home run in the playoffs.
After one out, Devan Ahart singled and Tim Locastro followed with a double down the left field line. Willie Calhoun hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game.
The Quakes tacked on three runs in the seventh, Curletta hit his second double and after a walk, Calhoun picked up his third RBI when he singled in Curletta. Scavuzzo then singled to load the bases. Bellinger would single in a run and Verdugo would drive in the third run of the inning on his fielder's choice.
The Giants added a run in the eighth to close the scoring for the night.
