2015 Midwest League playoffs schedule: Grant Holmes starts Game 1 for Great Lakes

The Class-A Great Lakes Loons is in the postseason for the first time in two years, and opens the Midwest League playoffs on Wednesday night with Game 1 of the Eastern Division quarterfinal against the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays) at home in Midland, Mich.

The Loons qualified for the playoffs by virtue of winning the first-half wild card in the Eastern Division, finishing at 38-30 (.559), percentage points ahead of the Dayton Dragons (Reds), who were 39-31 (.557). It is the first postseason berth for the Loons since 2013 and their fourth trip to the playoffs in the nine years of the franchise.

Lansing had the best record in the Eastern Division in the first half (42-28), and has home field advantage in this best-of-three series.

Grant Holmes, the Dodgers' first-round draft pick in 2014, starts for Great Lakes in Game 1. The Midwest League All-Star was 6-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 24 starts, with 117 strikeouts and 54 walks in 103⅓ innings, 11th in the league in whiffs.

Holmes had a rough end to his first full professional season, putting up a 6.06 ERA over his last five outings, with 10 walks and 12 strikeouts in 16⅓ innings, with opposing batters hitting .267/.361/.433 against him.

He will be followed in the Loons rotation by a pair of 2015 Dodgers draft picks. Andrew Sopko, the seventh-round selection this year out of Gonzaga, was 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA in five starts for Great Lakes, with 18 strikeouts and just four walks in 23 innings. He starts Game 2.

The final game of the series, if necessary, will be started by Isaac Anderson, the Dodgers' 40th-round pick out of Wichita State, who put up a 2.41 ERA in nine starts with the Loons, with 26 strikeouts and seven walks in 37⅓ innings.

Great Lakes was 7-9 against Lansing in 2015, including 3-5 at home and 4-4 on the road.

The winner of this series will move on to the semifinal round of the Midwest League playoffs, also best-of-three, facing the winner of Fort Wayne (Padres) vs. West Michigan (Tigers).

The Midwest League Finals follows, and is a best-of-five series.
