Dodgers minor leaguers Willie Calhoun and Cody Bellinger each hit home runs to lead the West to a 12-4 win in the 2016 Fall Stars Game on Saturday night at Surprise Stadium, in the annual showcase of top prospects in the Arizona Fall League.
Calhoun was named game MVP going 3-for-3 at the plate. He singled in the second inning, an RBI single in the third inning, then hit a two-run shot to right center field in the fifth inning against A’s right-hander Sam Bragg.
Calhoun batted eighth and played five innings at second base on Saturday night, and drove in three runs, and scored two.
Bellinger, batting second, was 1-for-5 on the night. He had a strong drive just short of the 400-foot sign in center field in the first inning, but it fell into the glove of center fielder Bradley Zimmer.
But he didn’t miss in the sixth inning, launching a ball over the right field bullpen for a two-run shot against Diamondbacks left-hander Jared Allen.
Bellinger played all nine innings at first base.
Outfielder Alex Verdugo, who was originally slated to play in the Fall Stars Game as well, instead is headed to Tokyo to play with Team Mexico in a pair of exhibition games against Team Japan next week.
