PHOENIX -- Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was originally listed on the travel roster for Friday's game in Surprise against the Rangers, but he is not in the lineup and will not make the trip to Surprise.
Gonzalez was dealing with neck stiffness last week, something that has bothered him off and on the last few years, though he downplayed the malady. Manager Dave Roberts said he just wanted to give Gonzalez an extra day, and the fact that that the Dodgers are playing on the road was a factor in the decision.
"He wanted to be in there today, but I just felt that after you come back from his neck, to drive 30 minutes then to take an hour and a half off before you crank it back up to play a game, I'd rather take that extra day and err on the side of caution," Roberts said. "I expect him in there tomorrow."
The Dodgers return home Saturday to host the Diamondbacks at Camelback Ranch.
Scott Kazmir starts for the Dodgers and is expected to pitch two innings, as are Mike Bolsinger and Jharel Cotton. The Dodgers plan to continue to use Cotton this spring as a starting pitcher rather than in relief. He was effective in both roles in 2015 in the minors, putting up a 2.45 ERA in 11 starts and 10 relief appearances, with 114 strikeouts in 95⅔ innings.
"Jharel is going to continue to get built up," Roberts said. "He's got a three-pitch mix, and we see him as a starter."
Also scheduled to pitch for the Dodgers on Friday are Pedro Baez, Louis Coleman and Jacob Rhame.
Chi Chi Gonzalez starts for the Rangers.
Friday's game will not be televised, but will be broadcast locally on radio on AM 570 and the Dodgers radio network.
