Chin-hui Tsao called up from Oklahoma City, Dodgers option Mike Bolsinger to Triple-A

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers optioned pitcher Mike Bolsinger to Triple-A on Thursday, as expected one day after his spot start on Wednesday night. To take his place on the active roster, the club purchased the contract of pitcher Chin-hui Tsao from Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers' 40-man roster is now full.

Manager Dave Roberts hinted after Wednesday's game that a roster move was likely for Thursday.

"Right now we're going to get together tonight and discuss some options, and figure out what we need to do," Roberts said. "Looking at the status of the bullpen, what gives us the best chance tomorrow and in the near future."

He also said before the game that the club would likely return from 13 to 12 pitchers once the club got back to playing in National League parks, which starts Friday in San Diego, so it will be interesting to see what happens there.

Tsao, who turns 35 on June 2, made his return to MLB in 2015 after not pitching professionally in the U.S. since 2008, and having not pitched since 2009, when he was banned by the Chinese Professional Baseball League for alleged game-fixing. The Dodgers signed him to a minor league deal last year after Tsao was cleared by MLB, then re-signed him again as a free agent on Feb. 3.

The right-hander had a 3.31 ERA in 17 relief appearances for Oklahoma City and led the club with six saves. Tsao struck out 14 and walked five, four unintentionally in 16⅓ innings. He last allowed a run on April 25, with 8⅓ scoreless innings in eight games since, with eight strikeouts and two walks.

But what's that? The Dodgers — eighth in the National League in runs scored (4.22 per game), 10th in OPS+ (92) and 11th in wRC+ (91); fourth in runs allowed (3.83 per game), sixth in ERA+ (106), fourth in FIP (3.40) — need offense more than they need pitching help?

No need to worry, since Tsao was 1-for-1 with a double in the majors last year, tops on the Dodgers with a 3.000 OPS.

Tsao, who wore uniform number 44 in 2015 with the Dodgers, will wear No. 59 this year.

The veteran right-hander actually has two option years remaining, having last used an option year in 2004 with the Rockies.
