Chris Taylor recalled from Triple-A, Dodgers designate Nick Tepesch for assignment

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers didn't like what they saw of Nick Tepesch in his Friday audition enough to give him another start, so the right-hander was designated for assignment on Saturday. The club recalled infielder Chris Taylor from Triple-A Oklahoma City for the time being.

What this means is that there will be a new starting pitcher for the Dodgers on Wednesday in Milwaukee.

It won't be Tepesch, who allowed five runs in his four innings in Friday's loss. The 27-year-old was signed to a minor league contract on June 6.

The Wednesday starter could technically be Mike Bolsinger, who will have been optioned the requisite 10 days by then, but if the club was satisfied with Bolsinger's work this season (6.83 ERA, 4.61 average innings, seven home runs allowed in six starts) they wouldn't have optioned him and created this mess in the first place.

Carlos Frias pitched 5⅓ scoreless innings for Oklahoma City on Wednesday, but since he was optioned to the minors on June 21 can't return to the majors before Friday unless he is replacing an injured player.

Jharel Cotton is on the 40-man roster and since returning to the rotation has a 3.18 ERA and 42 strikeouts to go with 12 walks in 34 innings.

Ross Stripling is also on the 40-man roster, but has spent most of the last four weeks just conditioning at Camelback Ranch. He pitched on Thursday, but only went three innings so he's probably not yet stretched out enough for a return.

Brock Stewart has struck out 10 in his last two starts, though is just three starts removed from Double-A, and began his year with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. He is not on the 40-man roster. A promotion to the majors would cap a remarkable rise, but perhaps one befitting his 1.47 ERA across three levels in 2016, with 99 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 86 innings.

Jose De Leon, also not on the 40-man but one of the top prospects in baseball, has just 15 innings on the season, though they have been great, with 24 strikeouts and five walks to go with his 2.40 ERA. But he is scheduled to start on Saturday night for Oklahoma City, which would take him out of the running for a Wednesday start with the Dodgers unless this outing isn't much more than an inning, like a glorified between-starts bullpen session.

The Dodgers now have 39 players on the 40-man roster, so there is room to add Stewart or De Leon if they choose to, without another corresponding move.

But whoever starts Wednesday for the Dodgers, that move will come on Wednesday. For now, they get four games with a full bench, with Taylor up from Oklahoma City.

Taylor was acquired Sunday from the Mariners for Zach Lee, and was hitting .320/.392/.471 with 22 doubles in 66 games in Triple-A, between Tacoma and Oklahoma City. In three  games for OKC, Taylor was 6-for-12 with three doubles, including 4-for-4 on Thursday night. He played two games at shortstop and one at third base.

Taylor will wear No. 3 for the Dodgers.
