LOS ANGELES -- Manager Dave Roberts had said earlier this week when asked about why Brock Stewart was starting against the Cubs today that Stewart gave the Dodgers the best chance to win.
Before today's game, Roberts explained why he believes that.
"I like the experience, as Julio has grown," Roberts said, "think Brock's a young pitcher just giving him the extra opportunity to pitch at home against the Cubs, he'll rise to the occasion."
"He's got the fastball, the curveball and I think he understands Yasmani," Roberts said, "and just being up here, I like his poise, and he's going to go out there and compete and we'll see what happens.
Roberts also said that Carlos Ruiz was brought in as the backup catcher and not a platoon partner for Yasmani Grandal.
"There was a day game yesterday and a day game today, so starting catcher should catch in my opinion," Roberts said, "now If it lines up on a day and a lefty is pitching that's great."
"[Ruiz] is our backup catcher, no one said he was going to play against every lefty, that was never said."
Roberts said that the Dodgers will call up right-handed pitchers Casey Fien and Louis Coleman and catcher Austin Barnes on September 1st. The Dodgers are still discussing if and when outfielder Yasiel Puig will come up, Roberts did mention that other players may be called up once Oklahoma City's season is over.
