LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers on Friday came to terms with a pair of relief pitchers on contracts for 2017, signing Luis Avilan and Josh Fields to one-year deals, avoiding salary arbitration.
Avilan will earn $1.5 million this season, and Fields will make $1.05 million, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
Friday was the day for players and teams to exchange salary figures should a hearing be needed if they couldn’t reach agreement. The Dodgers reached agreement with all four remaining eligible players, including catcher Yasmani Grandal ($5.5 million) and pitcher Alex Wood ($2.8 million).
As a “file and trial” team, had the Dodgers not reached agreement by Friday’s 10 a.m. PT deadline, the club would have ceased negotiating and planned for an arbitration hearing.
As it stands, the Dodgers have not had an arbitration hearing since 2007 with Joe Beimel, and club president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman last went to a hearing in 2012, with Tampa Bay. Friedman’s Rays were 5-0 in arbitration cases during his nine-year tenure as general manager.
Avilan had a 3.20 ERA and 2.13 FIP in 27 games in 2016, with 28 strikeouts and 10 walk in 19⅔ innings. With three years, 146 days of service time Avilan was eligible for salary arbitration for a second time, earning $1.39 million last year.
Fields had a 4.63 ERA in 37 games last year, including a 2.79 ERA and 3.61 FIP in 22 games after the Dodgers acquired him from the Astros on Aug. 1. Fields, like Avilan, is in his second year of salary arbitration without yet reaching four years of service, after spending some time in 2016 in Triple-A.
Fields earned $900,000 last year.
With the arbitration cases settled, the Dodgers have $209.5 million committed to 2017.
