PHOENIX — Spring training has finally arrived. Pitchers and catchers are reporting to Dodgers camp at Camelback Ranch this Wednesday morning, the official start of big league camp.
There isn’t much action on the field today, other than perhaps players throwing on their own or in the batting cages. Day 1 is really just for reporting to camp, getting physicals out of the way, and getting lockers situated if they weren’t already.
The first official workout for pitchers and catchers is Thursday.
But there will still be news today, most likely, as reporters flock in scrums to various players once the clubhouse opens. Position players don’t report until Monday, but there are likely several already here getting in extra work.
We will also speak with manager Dave Roberts and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman this afternoon, getting an initial overview of camp, or their thoughts on how to fit roughly 32 players onto a 25-man roster.
Perhaps we will get a better idea of just when the signings of Sergio Romo, Franklin Gutierrez and Chase Utley will become official. Or maybe we will see them around the Dodgers facilities.
Whatever happens today, it feels good to be back. You can literally smell baseball here.
