PHOENIX — The Dodgers open their Cactus League schedule on Saturday afternoon against the White Sox, and the first lineup of spring training will start with newcomer Logan Forsythe in the leadoff spot.

Forsythe bats first and plays second for the Dodgers, the same position in the batting order he occupied in all 125 of his starts in 2016 for the Rays. Manager Dave Roberts this spring said his lineups would fluctuate depending on matchups this season, as they did last season, but that he viewed Forsythe as a top of the order hitter, comfortable with him batting first, second or even third.

"Throughout his career, he's got a DNA of getting on base,” Roberts said. “For me, somewhere at the top makes sense."

Roberts on Saturday also mentioned Andre Ethier, Andrew Toles and Joc Pederson as other potential leadoff options.

With Adrian Gonzalez still prohibited from swinging a bat for the better part of this first week of games, first base will feature a cavalcade of Dodgers. On Saturday, Rob Segedin gets the start at first, where he started three times in the majors in 2016 and 31 times in Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Roberts on Saturday said the starters would likely get two plate appearances, which is usually the case this early in spring.

Pitchers won’t bat with such short outings earlier in camp, giving the Dodgers a designated hitter in the early going. Franklin Gutierrez gets the start at DH on Saturday, batting fifth.

Clayton Kershaw starts on the mound, and is expected to pitch one inning. Alex Wood will also pitch, and is expected to throw two frames.

Carson Fulmer starts for the White Sox.

Saturday is a home game for the Dodgers against their Camelback Ranch co-tenants.
