Dodgers Week 1 review: Derailed in Denver

The club had a winning week, but one that ended with a series loss on the road against the Rockies.

The Dodgers won four of seven games in the opening week of the season, the slow and steady 92-93-win pace that would probably suit them quite well by the end of the year. But given the disappointment of the first two games in Denver, the week still felt a little underwhelming, even if the Sunday rebound was good to see.

The good news is the offense showed the ability to break games open at times, scoring double-digit runs three times in their seven games last week against the Padres and Rockies.

Last year, it took the Dodgers 27 games to score at least 10 runs for a third time.

Batter of the week

Yasiel Puig batted all over the lineup last week — fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth — but made his presence felt with three home runs, two doubles and five walks, hitting .292/.414/.750 for the week. He was the only Dodger to start all seven games.

Pitcher of the week

I’m giving this one to Brandon McCarthy, who was the only non-Kershaw starter to last six innings in his start, and beat the Padres on Thursday by allowing two runs.

Week 1 results

Record: 4-3
40 runs scored (5.71 per game)
22 runs allowed (3.14 per game)
.749 pythagorean record

Miscellany

  • The Dodgers set a franchise record with four home runs on opening day
  • Also on opening day, Joc Pederson set a career high with five RBI, including a grand slam
  • Clayton Kershaw on Saturday allowed three home runs to the Rockies, including back-to-back home runs for the first time in his career
  • The Dodgers bullpen had a 1.61 ERA with 25 strikeouts and three walks

Transactions

Friday: Starting pitcher Rich Hill was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Thursday, and relief pitcher Josh Fields was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Game results

Monday: Dodgers 14, Padres 3

Tuesday: Padres 4, Dodgers 0

Wednesday: Dodgers 3, Padres 1

Thursday: Dodgers 10, Padres 2

Friday: Rockies 2, Dodgers 1

Saturday: Rockies 4, Dodgers 2

Sunday: Dodgers 10, Rockies 6

Upcoming week

The Dodgers run the Mark Grace gauntlet in the coming week, concluding their road trip with an NLCS rematch in Chicago against the Cubs, then return home to open a home stand with the Diamondbacks.

Sunday’s starter is a bit of a question mark. Rich Hill is eligible to return from the disabled list, but if his blister is still bothering him that would likely mean another start for Alex Wood.
