Dodgers Week 2 review: Ups and downs

MLB: Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers treaded some more water in the second week of the season, splitting six games against the Cubs and Diamondbacks. They had trouble finding the offense in the NLCS rematch at Wrigley Field, but the pitching was phenomenal in a series that saw 11 total runs for both teams in three games combined.

Back home, the Dodgers found their offensive groove again, until Sunday in a game that was also marred by Rich Hill having more blister problems.

Despite the sluggish 7-6 start, the Dodgers find themselves within striking distance of first place, 1½ games behind Colorado.

Batter of the week

Yasiel Puig continued his solid early work, hitting .368 (7-for-19) with a home run, six RBI and four walks last week. Honorable mention goes to Yasmani Grandal, who reached base in 11 of his 21 plate appearances.

Pitcher of the week

In his duel with old friend Zack Greinke on Friday, Clayton Kershaw took a shutout into the ninth inning in a win over Arizona. Honorable mention goes to Brandon McCarthy, who improved to 2-0 with six scoreless innings on Wednesday in Chicago.

Clayton Kershaw in his last 10 regular season starts at Dodger Stadium has allowed six total runs. He’s 9-0 with a 0.47 ERA, with 76 strikeouts and five walks in 76⅓ innings.

Saturday saw the first permanent statue at Dodger Stadium, depicting Jackie Robinson sliding into home.

Transactions

Wednesday: Two days after straining his left hamstring, Franklin Gutierrez was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and outfielder Trayce Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Friday: Relief pitcher Pedro Baez was activated from the disabled list, and pitcher Josh Fields was optioned to Triple-A.

Sunday: Rich Hill was activated from the disabled list to start on Sunday, and outfielder Trayce Thompson was optioned to Triple-A, giving the Dodgers 13 pitchers on the active roster for the first time this season.

Upcoming week

The Dodgers run the Quinton McCracken gauntlet this week, finishing up their weird wraparound series at home with Arizona, then welcome the Rockies to town for two games. After an off day, the club starts a road trip with a weekend series against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

With Hill still dealing with blister issues, Alex Wood is the most likely to start Saturday in Arizona.
