LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers finalized their opening day roster on Sunday, with no surprises. To get from the 30 players technically remaining in big league camp down to 25, the club placed five players on the new 10-day disabled list to begin the regular season.
The club placed Pedro Baez (right wrist contusion), Andre Ethier (herniated disc in his back), Scott Kazmir (left hip strain), Josh Ravin (right groin strain) and Brock Stewart (right shoulder tendinitis) on the DL, retroactive to Thursday. That means they could be activated as early as next Monday, though at least four of the five players won’t be ready by then.
Baez might be the best bet for a relatively early return, but the Dodgers are purposely taking things slow with the reliever, who set career highs in games pitched and innings in 2016.
“He pitched a lot last year, considerably more than he has ever pitched in a major league season. We’re going to be conservative with Pedro,” manager Dave Roberts said last week. “There is no hard-line, drop-dead date.”
Ethier was shut down until the first week of the season, when he’ll be reevaluated. Ravin is expected to miss several weeks with his groin strain, and Stewart hasn’t picked up a ball in weeks, with no timetable for his return just yet.
Kazmir is still having issues with his hip, which isn’t providing enough power for his delivery. It will take some time to fix.
“Like I told him, ‘We’ve got to figure this out’,” Roberts said. “It’s a good thing it’s not the arm or the shoulder, but we’ve got to get to the bottom of it.”
Yimi Garcia, out for the season after Tommy John surgery, was already on the 60-day disabled list.
