Dodgers Week 6: Continuing the push forward

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers continued to make strides last week, sweeping the Pirates and splitting four games in Colorado against the Rockies. The offense is clicking, and the Dodgers had a chance on Sunday to end the week in first place.

They didn’t, dropping the finale at Coors Field, but end the week 1½ games behind Colorado in the NL West. The Dodgers gained a game over the last week.

Batter of the week

Yasmani Grandal was red hot, with 13 hits in 22 at-bats for the week, hitting a ridiculous .591 with eight RBI. He started the week hitting .214/.302/.369 on the season, and ended it at .292/.367/.481.

Pitcher of the week

Alex Wood made two starts this week, and both times he struck out double digits. Both times he also allowed zero runs, making this a relatively easy choice.

Kenta Maeda deserves honorable mention here for taking a shutout into the ninth inning on Wednesday against the Pirates to complete the sweep.

Week 6 results

Record: 5-2
44 runs scored (6.29 per game)
27 runs allowed (3.86 per game)
.710 pythagorean record

Year to date

Transactions

Monday: Left shoulder soreness landed Brandon McCarthy on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5, and relief pitcher Adam Liberatore was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Tuesday: Relief pitcher Justin Marks was claimed off waivers from the Rays, and assigned to Triple-A.

Wednesday: Andrew Toles was placed on the disabled list, lost for the season with a torn ACL. A pair of outfielders — Brett Eibner and Scott Van Slyke -- were recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and Liberatore went on the DL with groin strain.

Wednesday: Relief pitcher Josh Ravin was activated from the disabled list, and optioned to Triple-A.

Thursday: One day after his longest start as a Dodger, Kenta Maeda had his turn come up on the disabled list merry-go-round, placed on the 10-day DL with hamstring tightness. This cleared a spot for Hyun-jin Ryu to return from his 10-day DL stint.

Game results

Monday: Dodgers 12, Pirates 1

Tuesday: Dodgers 4, Pirates 3 (10 innings)

Wednesday: Dodgers 5, Pirates 2

Thursday: Rockies 10, Dodgers 7

Friday: Dodgers 6, Rockies 2

Sunday: Rockies 9, Dodgers 6

The week ahead

The Dodgers run the Todd Linden gauntlet this week, heading to San Francisco for three games with the Giants, then returning home for four games against Don Mattingly, Dee Gordon, A.J. Ellis and the Marlins. The weekend rotation is a complete guess at this point.
