Dodgers Week 5: Cody Bellinger on fire

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers saw their week cut short by rain in San Diego of all places, but nothing could cut short Cody Bellinger this week.

Batter of the week

Cody Bellinger continued to make the most of his major league opportunity, hitting .429 with five extra-base hits, including three home runs, and 12 RBI in just five games this week. In his first 11 games, Bellinger is making his mark in the Dodgers’ record book.

Chris Taylor (4-for-7, seven walks) and Franklin Gutierrez (3-for-6, home run, two walks) had great weeks in reserve as well.

Pitcher of the week

Kenta Maeda struck out eight in five innings on Friday in San Diego, allowing two runs (one earned). His night included six strikeouts in a row at one point.

Week 5 results

Record: 3-2
35 runs scored (7.00 per game)
17 runs allowed (3.40 per game)
.789 pythagorean record

Year to date

Record: 17-14
147 runs scored (4.74 per game)
109 runs allowed (3.52 per game)
.634 pythagorean record (20-11)

The Dodgers own the second-best run differential in the National League at +38. Most of that has come at the expense of the Padres, who the Dodgers have outscored 45-14 in six games this season.

Nobody batted an eye when the Cubs outscored the Reds by 74 runs in their 19 meetings last season (maybe because Chicago was also +178 in their other 142 games). Still, you can only play who is on the schedule, and the Dodgers still have 13 games left this season to practice rounding third base against San Diego.

Transactions

Monday: A glute strain gave the Dodgers an opportunity to give Hyun-jin Ryu a rest on the 10-day disabled list, with reliever Josh Fields recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Tuesday: Franklin Gutierrez was activated from the disabled list after missing 19 games with a left hamstring strain, and outfielder/first baseman Scott Van Slyke was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Friday: For the first time in his career, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list, with right elbow soreness, and outfielder Joc Pederson was activated from the DL.

Game results

Monday: Giants 4, Dodgers 3

Tuesday: Dodgers 13, Giants 5

Wednesday: Giants 4, Dodgers 1 (11 innings)

Friday: Dodgers 8, Padres 2

Saturday: Dodgers 10, Padres 2

Sunday: Dodgers at Padres, postponed

The week ahead

The Dodgers run the Clint Barmes gauntlet, with three home games against the Pirates followed by a four-game series at Coors Field against the Rockies. The Dodgers’ rotation is my speculation; nothing has been officially announced, but Brandon McCarthy could be pushed back and Hyun-jin Ryu could return this week.
