Following the Los Angeles Dodgers dropping a pitcher’s duel last night in St. Louis, Brandon McCarthy takes the hill in a quick turnaround for a Thursday day "getaway" game to try to win the four-game series. He opposes Adam Wainwright, the dean of current Cardinal pitchers.

McCarthy, who has battled some patella tendonitis in his right knee, has held opponents to two runs or less in six of his eight 2017 starts. Over his last two starts, the gangly right-hander has allowed only one run and five hits over 12 innings while striking out 11 batters.

Jhonny Peralta and Jedd Gyorko have combined to face McCarthy 41 times, combining for one single while being fanned 12 times.

After a rocky start to the year where he sported a 6.37 ERA after seven starts, the 35-year-old Wainwright has a three-start run where he has allowed only one run in 20 13 innings.

Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Utley have faced the Redbirds right-hander a combined 54 times with both sporting batting averages around .200 against him. Utley, on a triples spree of late, owns one as his only extra-base hit against Wainwright.

At the other end of the success scale, Yasiel Puig, who returns to the lineup after having last night off, is 5-for-12 versus Wainwright with a double and a triple. Not surprisingly, Austin Barnes starts at catcher in the day game following the night game, and Logan Forsythe also gets the day off with Kiké Hernandez filling in at third base.

Notes

Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times is reporting that Alex Wood flew back to Los Angeles to get his sternum checked ...

... and that Adam Liberatore is headed for the disabled list.
