Devin Smeltzer delivers a great start, Quakes win

2016 5th round pick strikes out 9 as he picks up his first California League win

Tulsa — The day started early for the Dodger affiliates as the Tulsa Drillers won their game before the clock turned 1:30 p.m. Central time. Rancho Cucamonga and Great Lakes also won their games by bigger margins. Finally, both Dominican Summer League teams were victorious on Monday.

Player of the Day

2016 6th round pick, Devin Smeltzer, is today’s player of the day. Smeltzer made his second start for the Quakes and this one ranks among his best professional outings.

Smeltzer went seven innings and struck out nine as he picked up his first win for the Quakes.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City was off on Monday and they will start a four-game home series Tuesday night against the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals).

Double-A Tulsa

The Drillers won their matinee 4-3 over the Springfield Cardinals and the bullpen was the star of the day. Four pitchers, Ralston Cash, Karch Kowalczyk, Edward Paredes and Corey Copping, combined to pitch five scoreless innings and help the Drillers win their third straight game.

At the plate, Jose Miguel Fernandez had the big hit, a two-run homer in the sixth that gave the Drillers a 4-3 lead. Fernandez also singled in a run, for the game, he went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Catcher Wynston Sawyer went 3-for-3.

Cash got the win to go 3-2 for the season. Corey Copping picked up his fifth save.

Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes came home with a division to win in their sights. The Quakes defeated Inland Empire 66ers (Angels) 10-1 with strong pitching by Devin Smeltzer and solid offense by many.

Smeltzer went seven strong innings, he gave up an unearned run, five hits and struck out nine. Smeltzer won his first game as a Quake and Ivan Vieitez and Daniel Corcino each pitched one inning to finish off the game.

On offense, Errol Robinson was 4-for-5 with a double and run scored. DJ Peters hit his 10th home run. Victor Roache hit his third home run.

California League leader Ibandel Isabel hit his 15th home run, that is four more home runs than anyone else in the league.

Class-A Great Lakes

The Loons had both the offense and pitching on their game as they defeated South Bend Cubs 7-1. Leo Crawford pitched six scoreless innings, gave up three hits, two walks while striking out four. Sven Schuller recorded his third save.

Five Loons each had two hits, Gavin Lux, Oneil Cruz, Cody Thomas, Mitchell Hansen, and Erick Meza. Carlos Rincon hit his 11th home run of the season.

Hansen’s two hits were a double and a home run.
