LOS ANGELES —- The Dodgers announced this morning that they had put outfielder Franklin Gutierrez on the 10-day disabled list with an episode of ankylosis spondylitis. Ankylosis spondylitis is a form of progressive arthritis.

In Guttierrez’s place, the Dodgers recalled Mike Freeman from Oklahoma City. The Dodgers claimed Freeman waivers from Seattle on May 26, 2017.

Freeman had played both shortstop and the outfield at Oklahoma City and in June, he was hitting .321/.368/.396 in 17 games.

Freeman made his major league debut last July when he started in right field for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Dodgers. He went 0-for-3 with a walk. Since then, he was claimed by Seattle in August 2016 before coming to the Dodgers.

Manager Dave Roberts had planned to play Gutierrez today but Roberts also said he had daily conversations with Gutierrez to see how he is and that day games had been more difficult for him to play.

“Today was a day that had [Gutierrez] in there but he just couldn’t get his body going,” Roberts said, “to give him the ten days and hopefully allow him to reset game strength and eliminate some of the pain that he’s having.”

Roberts is not sure that just the ten days off will be enough for Gutierrez.

“I’d like to think that ten days will suffice and coming off after the off-day [July 3rd],” Roberts said, “in ten days we have Arizona and a couple of left-handers that we’re going to be facing in Corbin and Ray, so ideally he’ll back in a position to contribute for us in that series, but there is no guarantee.”

“He agreed that it was the best thing for our club for him to be on the DL for those ten days.”

Today’s lineup features Logan Forsythe at first, Austin Barnes at second and Cody Bellinger in right field.

Update on Corey Seager

“In talking to the trainer today, [Seager] feels considerably better today than he did yesterday,” Roberts said, “so that’s a good thing.” “Again, if the situation calls for it, we might call on him,” Roberts said, “but I’m not going to try to artificially create a situation for him to get into the game.”
