That was kind of a wild week. The Dodgers were up and down in St. Louis and Milwaukee, and snatched two victories from the jaws of defeat in the first two games against the Brewers. The end result was a 4-3 record, and a winning road trip should never be discounted.
In the bunched-up National League West, the Dodgers tasted first place all by themselves for a bit, but the week also saw them at times in second and third place. They ended the week a half-game back of Colorado, which is a game better than they started the week.
Batter of the week
Chris Taylor had the signature hit of the week with Saturday’s grand slam, but Chase Utley takes the cake this week, continuing his steady climb upward after a horrific start to the season. Utley hit .292/.393/.542 with a home run, triple, double, and three walks.
Pitcher of the week
Clayton Kershaw got a no-decision Friday, but also struck out a season-high 14 in seven innings in a dominant start that saw him retire 20 in a row at one point.
Week 9 results
Record: 4-3
27 runs scored (3.86 per game)
21 runs allowed (3.00 per game)
.613 pythagorean record
Year to date
Record: 35-23
283 runs scored (4.88 per game)
199 runs allowed (3.43 per game)
.656 pythagorean record (38-20)
Strikeouts galore
Friday was a huge strikeout day for Dodgers pitchers. Not only did Kershaw surpass 2,000 strikeouts for his career with a huge, 14-strikeout game, but the Dodgers tied a major league record and set a new National League mark with 26 strikeouts as a team, in 12 innings.
Four of those strikeouts were by Kenley Jansen, who surpassed Adam Wainwright for most strikeouts before his first walk of the season. As the week ends, Jansen holds the record all to himself with 40 strikeouts and no walks.
Transactions
Monday: Alex Wood was placed on the 10-day disabled list with SC joint inflammation in his left shoulder. Brandon Morrow had his contract selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and Brock Stewart was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Thursday: Adam Liberatore was placed on the 10-day disabled list with left forearm stiffness, and Grant Dayton was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Friday: Left-handed pitcher Jason Wheeler was acquired from the Twins for cash considerations, and optioned to Triple-A. To make room on the 40-man roster, Rob Segedin was moved to the 60-day disabled list.
Game results
Monday: Dodgers 5, Cardinals 1
Tuesday: Dodgers 9, Cardinals 4
Wednesday: Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1
Thursday: Cardinals 2, Dodgers 0
Friday: Dodgers 2, Brewers 1 (12 innings)
Saturday: Dodgers 10, Brewers 8
Sunday: Brewers 3, Dodgers 0
The week ahead
The Dodgers run the Herm Winningham gauntlet back at home this week, with three games against the Nationals, then three weekend contests against the Reds. This week not only features a weekday day game, but also a day off at home.
There are a few question marks in the Dodgers’ rotation, with Brandon McCarthy dealing with blisters and Alex Wood possibly slotting in over the weekend. But for now, until we hear otherwise, we’ll stick with the five starters on the active roster.
