A quartet of Dodgers were named to Baseball America’s midseason top 100 prospects list, with pitcher Walker Buehler as the biggest riser.
Buehler checks in at No. 17 overall on BA’s list, and is the fourth-highest pitching prospect. Buehler was also the top Dodger on the Baseball Prospectus midseason top 50, ranked No. 19.
The Dodgers’ first-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2015, Buehler has rebounded greatly from Tommy John surgery that wiped out nearly all of his 2016 season. The right-hander has a 2.48 ERA between Double-A Tulsa and Class-A Rancho Cucamonga this season, with 83 strikeouts and 17 walks in 61⅔ innings. He captured Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors last week.
Midseason top prospects
Player | Pos | BA rank | BP rank |
---|---|---|---|
Player | Pos | BA rank | BP rank |
Walker Buehler | RHP | 17 | 19 |
Alex Verdugo | OF | 35 | 27 |
Yadier Alvarez | RHP | 60 | 28 |
Willie Calhoun | 2B | 74 | NR |
This was a huge jump for Buehler, who was not in the Baseball America top 100 list during preseason.
Other Dodgers in the BA top 100 midseason list were Alex Verdugo at No. 35 (up from 53rd in the preseason), Yadier Alvarez 60th (down from 26th), and Willie Calhoun 74th (up from 86th).
Calhoun, who didn’t show up in the BP top 50 midseason list, is hitting .302/.344/.580 for Triple-A Oklahoma City, leading the team in home runs (19), RBI (57), runs scored (53), doubles (18), and hits (92).
Calhoun, like Verdugo, were named Pacific Coast League All-Stars, and will play in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday.
