Dodgers recall Brock Stewart, place Alex Wood on DL

Stewart makes his third start of the season on Tuesday in Pittsburgh

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers on Tuesday recalled Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start their second game of a four-game series against the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

The corresponding move was placing Alex Wood on the 10-day disabled list with SC joint inflammation, the same injury that caused him to miss 11 games in an earlier DL stint this season.

Wood said after Monday’s start that he has been dealing with the SC joint issue this month. He allowed three runs — all solo home runs — in six innings on Monday, and his 90.5-mph average fastball was his lowest of the season.

This was an open date in the rotation schedule with Yu Darvish placed on the disabled list over the weekend with back tightness. Darvish is only expected to miss one start, and slots in to pitch again on Sunday at home against the Brewers, the first day he is eligible to be activated.

In addition, it sounds like Wood will be back relatively soon.

The earliest Wood could be activated from the DL is next Friday, when the Dodgers open a four-game series against the Padres, including a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Stewart has a 1.64 ERA and 4.05 FIP in nine games with the Dodgers this season, including two starts, with 15 strikeouts and seven walks in 22 innings. He has allowed nine total runs, though just four earned.

In his seven relief appearances, Stewart has a 1.26 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 14⅓ innings. But in his two starts, he has allowed seven runs (two earned) in 7⅔ innings with just three strikeouts among his 36 batters faced.

Stewart was scheduled to start Monday for Oklahoma City but was scratched in preparation for this major league opportunity.

Pittsburgh moves

The Pirates made a flurry of roster moves as well before Tuesday’s game. After dealing with a depleted bullpen and an extra-inning game on Monday, Pittsburgh placed pitchers Joaquin Benoit and George Kontos on the 10-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates recalled pitchers Steven Brault, Johnny Barbato, and Edgar Santana from Triple-A.
