LOS ANGELES — Manager Dave Roberts moved some players around the diamond when he wrote out tonight’s lineup.
Austin Barnes starts at second base and Roberts believes this is just another example of collecting more information for down the road.
“I think that to look at each game and put guys in certain positions and Austin can play second base,” Roberts said, “but to give him an opportunity to get some repetitions out there and how the season might play out, there might be opportunities where he’s going to play [second], so to give him some reps I think is a good thing.”
Roberts said Barnes has “earned those opportunities to stay consistent, to stay in the lineup.”
Chase Utley returns to the lineup and makes tenth start at first base, his first since early July.
“And Chase, obviously hasn’t played a whole lot of first base,” Roberts said, “but I want to keep him sharp and to have him in the lineup and also Adrian [Gonzalez], I think he played three days in a row consistently throughout his rehab assignment, so now to play eight days in a row, and to give him break and get him back in there tomorrow, I think that’s a good thing.”

Curtis Granderson is in the lineup, batting fourth, after being off on Friday. Granderson has hit three home runs since his arrival last Saturday,
“He’s a pro, he’s been a very productive player throughout his career,” Roberts said, “for our ball club where we have that kind of grinder, relentless mentality at the plate and see a lot of pitches, he really fits in.”
