Dodgers Week 23: The worst best team ever

LOS ANGELES — Last week for the Dodgers was the worst week, possibly literally. The club lost every game of a homestand longer than six games (0-7) for the first time in franchise history.

“It’s bad right now, there’s no getting around that,” said Clayton Kershaw.

The Dodgers, who have won 11 straight and 10 straight in different streaks, have now lost 10 in a row. They are the first team with double-digit streaks both good and bad since the 1991 Mets.

“In the first couple weeks when I joined the team, the team was playing really good baseball,” said Yu Darvish. “I was like, ‘Wow, everything we do is working.’ Right now we’re on the opposite side.”

The Dodgers have led after nine of their last 90 innings.

“I can’t explain it,” manager Dave Roberts said. “There is a little bit that seeps in, and things keep perpetuating as far as negativity, where you feel at some point everything goes against you.”

That the Dodgers still own the best record in baseball (92-51) is of little solace, given the 10 consecutive defeats.

“Just sitting back and saying, ‘We’re still the best team in baseball’ isn’t the answer,” Justin Turner said. “Because regardless of what the record says, right now we’re the worst team in baseball.”

“It’s getting to the point now where everybody has to look in the mirror. It’s time to turn it around,” said Alex Wood.

“There’s really nothing to say, but we’ve got to find a way to win a game,” said Roberts.

Batter of the week

Andre Ethier was 4-for-7 with his first home run of the year, taking this award rather easily.

None of the regulars did much at all — Austin Barnes had the best week among them, with an .800 OPS in 14 plate appearances — and the team as a whole hit just .184/.247/.289 in seven games during the week.

Pitcher of the week

Ross Stripling threw four scoreless innings in relief, one of the few bright spots on a pitching staff that posted a 6.19 ERA — 7.76 from the bullpen, and 4.89 from the starters.
