Dodgers & Padres to play series in Mexico in 2018, per report

Mets V Padres

The Dodgers and Padres will play a regular season series in Monterrey, Mexico in 2018, per reports out of Mexico.

The series from May 4-6 will be held at Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey, roughly 1,400 miles southeast of Petco Park in San Diego, with improvements planned to upgrade the locker rooms and increase the stadium capacity to near 30,000 seats, per Marco Almaraz of La Cancha.

This is a home series for the Padres. Nothing has yet been announced by Major League Baseball or the teams.

There have been four major league games played in Monterrey, all involving the Padres. In 1996, San Diego played three games against the Mets from Aug. 16-18, and in 1999 the Padres and Rockies opened the regular season with a single game in Mexico.

For the Dodgers, this series comes at the end of a 10-game road trip, with the Mexico series following four games in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers have an off day scheduled on Monday, May 7.

The Dodgers have played in Mexico before, though the previous games were all exhibitions. In 1991, they played two games in Monterrey, one against Industriales de Monterrey and one against the Brewers. The Dodgers also played preseason games in Mexico City in 1964 against the Red Devils and in 2003 against the Mets.

This would be the second time the Dodgers have played regular season games outside of the United States or Canada. The club also opened the 2014 season with two games in Sydney, Australia against the Diamondbacks.
