PHOENIX — It is St. Patrick’s Day so every team in baseball is incorporating green into their uniforms today. For the Dodgers that means green caps with a D on the front and a shamrock logo on the side.
One oddity is that the Dodgers are wearing blue jerseys as the road team against the White Sox at Camelback Ranch, rather than fully committing to green.
“It does clash a little bit but it makes a statement,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Hyun-jin Ryu starts for the Dodgers, who are the road team in this one. Miguel Gonzalez, out of San Fernando High School and Los Angeles Mission College, starts for the White Sox. Gonzalez faced the Dodgers twice last season and allowed one run in six innings each time.

There is still a week left in camp here at Camelback Ranch and 12 days before opening day, and the competition for bullpen spots hasn’t yet worked itself out. Tom Koehler was part of the relief plan but his shoulder injury threw the Dodgers a curveball. His arm has been out of a sling for a week but Koehler still hasn’t picked up a baseball and there is no timetable for his return.
“To be quite honest it’s a little more fuzzy,” Roberts said of the bullpen competition. “We’ve got time to continue to evaluate, whether we carry seven or eight. There are opportunities for some guys to step up and pitch well and show they deserve the opportunity.”
Garvey in camp
After a few years away longtime Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey is back in camp as a guest instructor with the club. On Saturday he spoke to the team during their morning clubhouse meeting.
“Steve came in and talked about his days as a batboy. He got a chance to batboy the Brooklyn Dodgers for a couple days, and talked about what it meant to him,” Roberts said. “He captured the room and he nailed it. It was really cool to hear what he had to say.”
In addition to the green caps the Dodgers will also wear these socks on Saturday:
