Andrew Toles optioned, Dodgers opening day roster basically set

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers on Wednesday optioned Andrew Toles to Triple-A Oklahoma City, which basically sets their opening day roster.

Toles hit .283/.286/.566 with three home runs this spring after coming back from ACL surgery that wiped out the final four months of his 2017 season. The writing was on the wall for Toles, who started just one of the final nine exhibition games.

The final two spots basically came down to two battles, with Joc Pederson beating out Toles for the left-handed left fielder role despite hitting just .148/.246/.259 in the spring.

Trayce Thompson, who is out of options, was designated for assignment earlier in the day when the Dodgers claimed pitcher Cory Mazzoni off waivers. That leaves the final bench spot for Kyle Farmer, who hit .333/.426/.692 (13-for-39, 3 homers, 5 doubles) in spring while splitting time between catcher and third base.

We still don’t know the official fate of Yimi Garcia, who continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery. We know he won’t open the season with the team. The only question is whether he starts the season on the disabled list or in Triple-A.

Garcia pitched on Saturday, and pitched in six Cactus League games.

“Is he close, absolutely? But to run the play out in his rehab is the right thing to do,” manager Dave Roberts said Saturday. “Just to kind of build him up, go through the progression, and then he’ll be with us.”

These moves leave 25 for the opening day active roster, which has yet to be officially announced. There will be 13 pitchers, including the out-of-options Wilmer Font, who will give the Dodgers eight relief pitchers out of the gate.
