Dodgers vs. Giants opening day history

Giants V Dodgers

Thursday will mark the 32nd time since joining the National League in 1890 that the Dodgers and Giants will open their season against each other.

The Dodgers lead the all-time series 16-15. Their first opening day meeting was April 18, 1895 at the Polo Grounds in New York, with Brooklyn winning the road game 7-4.

When the two teams were in New York the Dodgers were 11-9 in opening day games against the Giants. Brooklyn was just 2-5 at home on opening day against the Giants, including losses in their first five such contests — twice at Washington Park and three games at Ebbets Field.

The two teams’ first game out west was at Seals Stadium in San Francisco, an 8-0 Giants win.

Since moving to California the Giants have won six of 11 opening day contests, though the Dodgers have won the last three (2008, 2011 and 2013). In eight meetings at Dodger Stadium the Dodgers are 5-3.

One game not included here is when Kevin Elster claimed AT&T Park as his own, hitting three home runs on April 11, 2000 in the inaugural game in that stadium. But that came in the second week of the season, not opening day, after both the Dodgers and Giants began their seasons on the road.
