Dodgers Week 3 review: Bookending the losses

MLB: Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers bookended their week with a pair of good wins, but in between was three games of bad baseball and another losing week. We are five series into 2018 and the Dodgers have yet to win one.

Dodgers batter of the week

Chris Taylor hit three home runs, including two to lead off a game, and led the team with six RBI and tied for the team lead with four runs scored. Honorable mention goes to Yasmani Grandal, who continued hitting (5-for-11, home run), and Chase Utley, who was 4-for-10 with four RBI. Utley is 4-for-5 as a pinch hitter this season

Dodgers pitcher of the week

Hyun-jin Ryu takes the cake this week with six scoreless innings and eight strikeouts against Oakland. He narrowly beats out Clayton Kershaw, who started with six scoreless innings against Arizona, with 12 strikeouts, but allowed a run in the seventh inning.

Week 3 results

2-3 record
25 runs scored (5.00 per game)
35 runs allowed (7.00 per game)
.351 pythagorean record

Season to date

5-9 record
54 runs scored (3.86 per game)
62 runs allowed (4.43 per game)
.437 pythagorean record (6-8)

Transactions

Saturday: Andrew Toles was off to a hot start, hitting .462 (12-for-26) with four doubles and a home run in Triple-A, but pulled a hamstring and was placed on the seven-day minor league DL.

Saturday: Relief pitcher Dylan Baker was sent outright to Double-A Tulsa, removing him from the 40-man roster.

Sunday: Logan Forsythe went on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, and utility man Breyvic Valera was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City

Game results

Tuesday: Dodgers 4, A’s 0

This 1974 Topps card of Padres pitcher Rich Troedson is one of several variants that used “Washington” instead of “San Diego” because of the team’s pending move.

Wednesday: A’s 16, Dodgers 6

Friday: Diamondbacks 8, Dodgers 7

Saturday: Diamondbacks 9, Dodgers 1

Sunday: Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 2

The week ahead

The Dodgers run the Ray Kroc gauntlet this week, heading to San Diego for three games against the Padres followed by a return home to play the Nationals over the weekend. The Padres were so close to moving to Washington following the 1973 season that Topps produced several cards in their 1974 set with “Washington” and “Nat’l Lea.” Padres cards, but Kroc, the McDonald’s owner, bought the team in January 1974 and kept them in San Diego.
