Dodgers Week 1 review: All the shutouts

MLB: San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers’ first “week” is in the books, with Thursday’s relatively early start to the season providing for a shortened four-game week that was anything was ordinary.

Even though they outscored the Giants 14-2 the Dodgers are just 2-2 after four games because baseball is often weird and the unexpected can become the norm. The first two games ended the same, with Joe Panik hitting a home run for the game’s only run, making the Giants just the second team ever to open a year with two 1-0 wins, joining the 1943 Reds.

With just two runs allowed the Dodgers tied the 1915 Phillies for the fewest given up in the first four games of the season. Twelve Dodgers have pitched in the first four games, and the only ones to give up a run are Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen, just like we all predicted.

Batter of the week

It was a light offensive start but Kiké Hernandez was 3-for-9 (.333) while leading the team in doubles (2), RBI (3) and walks (2). Also, this:

Pitcher of the week

Alex Wood led the scoreless brigade with the best start of the opening series, allowing just one infield single in his eight innings, but was given no support on Friday against the Giants.

Week 1 results

Record: 2-2
14 runs scored (3.50 per game)
2 runs allowed (0.50 per game)
.972 pythagorean record

Transactions

Tuesday: Outfielder a Trayce Thompson was designated for assignment, and pitcher Cory Mazzoni was claimed off waivers from the Cubs.

Wednesday: Andrew Toles was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Thursday: In finalizing the opening day roster third baseman Justin Turner and pitchers Tom Koehler and Yimi Garcia were placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to March 26.

Friday: Those three days sure were fun, but Mazzoni is no longer a Dodger, claimed off waivers back to Chicago.

Sunday: Utility infielder Breyvic Valera was acquired from the Cardinals for minor league outfielder Johan Mieses.

Game results

Thursday: Giants 1, Dodgers 0

Friday: Giants 1, Dodgers 0

Saturday: Dodgers 5, Giants 0

Sunday: Dodgers 9, Giants 0

The week ahead

The Dodgers head out on their first road trip of the year, running the Brandon Medders gauntlet through Phoenix and San Francisco. Nothing has been announced yet but with a pending off day next Monday there is no way Kershaw gets pushed to Tuesday to pitch on six days rest, so expect a little bit of a rotation shuffle at the end of the week.
